Conversion of Food Waste into Polylactic Acid Fibre

This project developed a novel bioprocess which makes use of food waste for the sustainable production of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) fibre in textile industry. The process consists of lactic acid fermentation, lactic acid polymerisation and melt spinning.

Summary
This project developed a novel bioprocess which makes use of food waste for the sustainable production of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) fibre in textile industry. The process consists of lactic acid fermentation, lactic acid polymerisation and melt spinning. Different kinds of food waste are analysed and the nutrients are utilised in lactic acid fermentation by bacteria. Lactic acid in fermentation broth is recovered and purified for polymerisation. The possible green catalyst and moderate reaction condition in polymerisation were developed. Finally PLA fibre is manufactured by melt spinning.

Technology Benefits
- Environmental friendly: utilisation of food waste; no pollution.
- Low production cost: food waste as cost-free material, simple facility required in lactic acid recovery.
- Biorefinery and recycle: a process from food waste to textile product, biodegradation of PLA into environment.
