Systems and Methods to Improve the Performance of TCP over Mobile Data Networks

Summary

This invention discloses a novel approach to address the problem of optimizing transport protocol for mobile data networks - a network-centric approach. We propose to realize protocol optimizations within the network by means of deploying a network-layer device — called a mobile accelerator, which performs protocol optimizations on-the-fly to improve transport protocol performance over mobile data networks, without requiring any modification to the server or the client protocol implementations in the OS. Our extensive experiments conducted in production 3G/HSPA and LTE networks show that the proposed mobile accelerator can increase the throughput performance of TCP by over 200%. This mobile accelerator can be readily deployed in existing mobile data networks and can improve the network performance of all existing network applications running atop TCP.

Title: METHOD AND SYSTEM FOR IMPROVED TCP PERFORMANCE OVER MOBILE DATA NETWORKS
Usefulness: METHOD AND SYSTEM FOR IMPROVED TCP PERFORMANCE OVER MOBILE DATA NETWORKS
Summary: Method for controlling traffic congestion i.e. TCP traffic congestion, in a high-speed mobile data network such as Third Generation (3G) network, High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) network and Long term evolution (LTE) network.
Novelty: Method for controlling transmission control protocol traffic congestion in e.g. long term evolution network, involves controlling packet transmission as function of reception timings of packets without modification of operating systems
