詳細技術說明

Palladium catalyzed telomerization of ethylene glycol, cellulose, starch and related mono-carbohydrates is used to synthesize tunable hydrophobic nanocellulose. It is a 100% atom efficient process but is not recyclable and requires the use of multiple toxic solvents and reagents. Researchers at the University of California, Davis have developed a green process where cellulose is telomerized using butadiene sulfone (BDS) as a multi-functional reagent, solvent and acid source. The method can be used with different forms of nanocellulose and utilizes BDS as the sole chemical. The method does not require any additional solvents and only a catalytic amount of the palladium complex is needed to start the reaction. This method bypasses the use of extremely flammable reactants and allows for the functionalization and defibrillation of cellulose in one reaction container without other work-up or chemical transferring. This technology is robust, sustainable, and an environmentally safer method to create hydrophobic cellulose nanofibrils.
