Professor Gaurav Sant and colleagues in UCLA’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering have developed a new method of inhibiting corrosion in steel-reinforced concrete. The approach combines benefits of NOx abatement by anatase (TiO2) with aspects of inorganic chemical capture exhibited by AFm phases. The technology, which can deploy anatase either topically or integrally, is well-suited to apply to critical, high-value structural elements exposed to moisture and salt, and whose repair or replacement is expensive. Moreover, an intelligent materials program is followed, where in real and virtual experiments feedback to each other to aid in materials design.
