Triclosan and silver compound containing medical devices
Lead Inventors: Shanta M. ModakMedical devices comprising synergistic combinations of triclosan and silver containing compounds and their preparation are described. The medical device is prepared by exposing a polymeric medical article with a solution comprising silver compound, triclosan and hydrogel for an effective period of time. The synergistic effects are achieved at relatively very low concentration of these agents.Medical articles treated with triclosan and silver compounds do not present undesirable adverse effects. Catheters, impregnated with triclosan and silver compounds are smoother and shinier in comparison with catheters impregnated with triclosan and chlorhexidine. Due to their smooth surfaces, the medical devices are physically less irritating and hence less likely to provoke fibrinogen and/or fibronectin deposition, thereby avoiding bacterial colonization.
