A storage means is coupled to the input for storing data and for providing data. A block-matching means compares a block of pixel data from current frames and past frames to develop motion vector signals indicative of best-matched blocks of data. A comparator performs multiple mode comparisons of a block of pixel data. An output coupled to the comparator provides the best-mode signals, motion vector signals and pixel error signals of data for transmission to a decoder.The methods and systems provide coding for interlaced video data so as to permit efficient and accurate decoding.
