Biowall for Residential Applications
Researchers at Purdue University have developed a biowall, an eco-friendly air filtration system that can be used in residential HVAC systems to improve air quality. This system uses plants grown in a growth media that is loosely packed so that air may pass through the media. As it does, the plant's roots absorb volatile organic compounds from the passing air, removing these compounds from circulation. By integrating this into the return duct of a central AC unit, a biowall can affect the air quality for the entire home. Purdue researchers first featured a biowall in Purdue's 2011 Solar Decathlon entry called INhome, which earned a second place finish.
