High thermal diffusivity bimetallic cores for significantly extending the service life of cores or dies used in die casting operations. Cores or dies are laser clad with a layer of a maraging steel of precise thickness on a base surface. These cores would otherwise be directly exposed to molten aluminum during die casting. An added benefit of the enhanced heat extraction by the laser deposited cores is a faster cooling rate in the aluminum casting, leading to improved mechanical properties.
