USF inventors have developed a method to actively change the tension of a string to change its free vibration frequency. This is achieved in a purely mechanical fashion by utilizing a specialized kinetic shape. The kinetic shape is attached to an instrument string. A predefined weight or spring is applied to the shape, which when rotated produces a predicted tension onto the string. The shape can apply different tensions to the string depending on its orientation. When the string is plucked it vibrates at a frequency generating a sound frequency. A prototype device has been constructed to illustrate the concept of the musical kinetic shape. The prototype is controlled by a computer and can be easily programmed to rotate the kinetic shape into a desired position to produce specified and exact notes. By moving the platform and plucking the string, songs can be played using the unique and novel instrument.
