Deep space application like space vehicles, space stations, personal equipment as well as applications in the biomedical arts and atom splitting research.
Poly (4-methyl-1-pentene) (PMP) is a high performance, transparent hydrocarbon similar to polyethylene. PMP has improved mechanical and thermal properties over that of polyethylene and is an ideal replacement material for polyethylene in deep space applications. The incorporation of SWNTs in the PMP matrix enhances its mechanical and thermal properties as well as increase its resistance to GCR.University of South Florida inventors have developed a method to fabricate a PMP-nanotube composite that maintains transparency while enhancing radiation resistance, electrical and mechanical properties. This unique composite material enables a high level of processability for integrating the material into the spacecraft, manned space vehicles, spacesuits and manned planetary terrestrial living quarters.
