A Novel Electrocardiographic Screening Algorithm for Reduced Left Ventricular Ejection Fraction

详细技术说明

Tech ID: chu001069 IntroductionLeft ventricular systolic dysfunction is a type of heart disease with a prevalence of 2-3% in the adult population. This dysfunction can be quantified by a severely depressed left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF≤35%). Approximately half of the patients are asymptomatic and, unfortunately for many, sudden cardiac death (SCD) can be the first manifestation of heart disease. Implantable defibrillators to prevent SCD are largely underutilized in this group of patients due to the low prevalence of electrocardiogram (ECG) screening for reduced LVEF. There is an unmet need for cost effective systems to facilitate the identification of these patients as candidates for early treatment. Technology DescriptionTo address this issue, the inventors developed a novel, non-invasive, and cost-effective system and algorithm to screen asymptomatic patients for severely depressed LVEF using ECG data. The algorithm compares the patient ECG data against a predetermined specific set of ECG abnormalities. For each abnormality identified in a patient, an additional point is added to the patient's score. When the score goes above certain threshold, the algorithm would predict LVEF≤35% in this patient suggesting that the patient is eligible for further treatment. Stage of DevelopmentThe algorithm was validated using archived patient ECG data in an ongoing community based study where the inventors found a strong correlation between scores higher than the threshold and LVEF≤35%.  Advantage/NoveltyApart from being non-invasive and cost effective, the invention solves the challenging problem of identifying patients with asymptomatic left ventricular systolic dysfunction.  Application• Diagnosis of reduced LVEF for prevention of SCDs Intellectual Property• PCT Application filed
