TECHNOLOGY DESCRIPTION:Researchers at the University ofDelaware have developed a novel method to attenuate the negative effects ofarterial skeletonization. This invention involves protecting a skeletonizedblood vessel comprises forming a coating comprising a biocompatible hydrogel onat least a portion of the outer surface of the vessel. This hydrogel can eitherbe deposited on the vessel or be formed on the vessel. The concentration of thehydrogel polymers can differ with the vessel type. This prevents the decreaseof circumferential strain which accompanies skeletonization, and prevents anyfurther effects of the same.APPLICATION:Thisis a potent method for protection of skeletonized blood vessels predominantly seenduring surgery and blood vessel manipulation.PROBLEMS ADDRESSED: Coronaryarterial diseases are a leading cause of death in the US and worldwide.  Principal treatments include angioplasty toopen blockages and surgery to place bypass grafts using a common technique,skeletonization.  In skeletonization theartery is dissected free of all surrounding tissue, solely yielding the artery.In all cases, maladaptive responses in the manipulated vessels can result infibrosis, stenosis, and vessel failure. Hence approaches that attenuate these negative effects needed.
