InventionThis invention uses an assay that can predict the growth rate of embryonic aquatic animals, cells from aquatic animals, or aquatic plants. The growth rate is measured by colorometric/fluorometric signals. BackgroundPrevious research has shown that the assay described in this invention can be used to measure the production of reducing equivalents from the metabolism of nutrients. Further research has shown this same assay is also able to predict the growth rate of aquatic plant and animal species. This can be useful in the field of aquaculture to sort the fish being bred. Fish displaying optimal growth can be easily selected, thereby increasing the likelihood of the fish being a larger size in adulthood.ApplicationsMeasuring the growth rate of various fish embryos, such as tilapia, trout, sturgeon and shellfish.Measuring the growth rate of plants, such as lettuce.Aids in determining adverse health and environmental factors affecting the growth of the organism.AdvantagesLimited methods exist today to predict growth of aquatic species.
