DriveSim-Prognostic Driving Simulator for Return to Drive Testing
After undergoing orthopedic surgery of thelower limb (such as ACL reconstruction), patients are required to take aclinical test to measure readiness to return to driving. The current test isunrealistic and does not provide any quantitative data. Our invention is adriving simulator device which is intended to more accurately determine post-operativepatients' driving capabilities. With the use of a pedal box to mimicbrake and gas control, and electronics controlled by an Arduino Uno, the devicemeasures force exerted on the brake pedal by the user, as well as time tobraking, reaction time and foot transfer time. Though the device was made inresponse to an orthopedic need, it has possibilities for use in the DMV officesto determine if a driver meets the reaction time requirements to safely operatea vehicle without posing as a driving hazard.
