The invention can convert a non-dimmable lighting system to a dimmable one without replacing the non-dimmable ballast circuitry of the lighting system. By diverting the current being supplied to the lamp tube, the dimming module installed at each lamp tube can vary the brightness of the lamp. The module is applicable to all types of electric discharge lamp tubes, including fluorescent lamps, high intensity discharge lamps, and mercury arc lamps. New lighting systems employing salvaged or recycled ballasts are compatible with the module.
