Highly Effective Inotropic Strategy for Cardiac Failure and Rhythm Disorders - 2168

Overview
The incidence of heart disease has been increasing in recent years due in part to the prevalence of sedentary lifestyles and the growing geriatric population. Congestive heart failure is a condition in which the heart muscles become too weak to pump sufficient blood to and from the body, and it can be treated with inotropic medications.
Inotropic medications increase the contractility of the heart, thus increasing the cardiac output. However, current inotropic drugs (e.g. digitalis and digoxin) have limited utility due to narrow therapeutic indices and unfavorable side effects.
Invention
UK researchers are developing a method for safely controlling cardiac rate and treating heart failure and related disorders.
Results from mouse knock-out models and electrocardiogram (ECG)studies indicate that Rad knock-out (or silencing) in the ventricular myocardium alone can provide increased cardiac output (a positive inotrope) in a safe fashion.
Applications
- Target for Treating heart failure and/or cardiac rhythm disorders
Advantages
- May reduce frequency of hospitalizations in patients with heart failure
- Completely novel target for improving cardiac function in patients with heart disease
- Leads to healthy cardiac remodeling
IP Status
Patent Pending
Development Status
Work is currently in preclinical stage
