Plant parasitic nematodes lead to severe reduction in yield in many agronomic and horticultural crops. Certain types, such as root-knot or cyst nematodes, can reduce yield by as much as 10% to 50%, which result in estimated worldwide crop losses of $80 billion annually. Current pest management options for controlling nematodes are very limited and effective organophosphate soil fumigants and non-fumigant nematicides, are increasingly under regulatory pressure.

UC Riverside nematologist, Ole Becker has identified an effective synergistic effect of a combination treatment, using one or more nematicide materials, with one or more biocontrol agents. The timing and selection of this combination enhances the plant’s pest resistance and the agents can be applied to plant propagation material, such as a seed. This is significantly more effective that just seed chemical treatment protection against nematode invasion, which often lasts for only for a short time, as it can protect long season crops that are exposed to multiple generations of pests.
A major agricultural industry partner has licensed this technology, and will incorporate this treatment into seed materials distributed for a variety of commodity crops throughout the world.
