- *Abstract
-
Dr. Seok Kim from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has developed a new lab on a chip device that utilizes shape memory polymer properties to dynamically move a water droplet across a chip surface. The device has ITO patterned heaters overlaid with a SMP layer. The heaters are programmable, and their interaction with the SMP layer drives the droplet movement. This technology overcomes certain downfalls of current methods including biofouling due to electrostatic attraction, voltage breakdown of the dielectric surface, and degradation of the dielectric layer which leads to inconsistent results.
