Overview
Current implementations of 3D image acquisition are almostexclusively limited to single-frame captures. These systems frequently havedrawbacks such as loss of detail, and generally demand use of expensive, specialized equipment. This problem can be especially troubling for video gameand animation developers, who have a need to capture full 3D motion sequencesin a quick, reliable manner. UK researchers are solving this problem with their system forperforming 3D imaging of objects undergoing motion.
Invention
UK researchers are developing a system for performing3D imaging of surfaces in motion using the novel “Lock and Hold” (“L&H”)image acquisition technique. Utilizing an image acquisition device and aprojector, a depth map of the surface-of-interest is gathered during the “Lock”phase of acquisition. This depth map is used as the starting point for the“Hold” pattern, which tracks temporal deformations of the surface-of-interestduring a motion sequence.
Applications
- gaming
- animation
