- *Abstract
-
This invention introduces a thermostable cellulase, E3, isolated from Thermobifida (Thermomonospora) fusca. E3 and its derivatives hydrolyze cellulose optimally at high temperatures and they exhibit enzymatic activity in a broad pH range.
Potential Applications:
Higher hydrolysis reaction temperatures result in enhanced reaction kinetics and make E3 useful for industrial applications that require high temperatures. Cellulases can be used to convert agricultural cellulosic wastes into ethanol, extract products from plant materials and as an animal feed supplement.. Cellulases also have many additional applications in the paper, food, and textile industries.
Potential Advantages:
The ability of E3 to function at high temperatures makes it valuable in processes that require high heat and renders processes less costly by decreasing the amount of enzyme needed and reducing the time of exposure to the enzyme.
