*Abstract

Cornell's new out-of-plane, wide-angle passive light emitter provides a simple solution for improving display pixels and advancing silicon photonics.  Consisting of one or more specially designed ring and disc resonator cavities coupled to a waveguide, the emitter transmits light through the planar waveguide and uniformly emits it through the resonator cavity.  The resonator cavity can be tailored to control the emission characteristics of the emitter, including the ability to produce out of plane emissions.  This opens a wide range of applications for the emitter including out-of-plane coupling and display pixels.  The technology promises to improve virtually all aspects of display pixel applications including viewing angle, thinness, speed, brightness, color, and power efficiency.
