- *Abstract
-
A biological/chemical sensor was created based on photon tunneling technology in a nano-fluidic system. The invention provides a system and a method for detecting changes in the index of refraction of an extremely small quantity of fluid that can range into nanoliter volumes, resulting in a sensor that can use the physics of lasers to analyze a sample with high accuracy and repeatability at a very low cost. The new sensor achieves far greater detection sensitivity than existing technology and can be formed into arrays for simultaneous sampling of multiple analytes. With its incredible versatility and ability to detect viruses, spores, and other very fine particulates, as well as organic molecules and chemicals, the technology will find wide application.
