Background: Recently, growing interest in pulsed laser processing is sparking innovative research to improve methods of writing waveguides in optical materials. Polycrystalline ceramics, in particular, are receiving significant attention for optical material applications. They offer high chemical stability and relatively efficient fabrication compared to glasses and single crystals. The potential drawback to this widespread application of waveguide structures in ceramic-based devices is the usage of relatively high power and temperature to induce permanent optical changes in ceramics.
Description: UCR researchers invented a low energy process of introducing waveguide-like structures into the transparent polycrystalline ceramic material, ytria stabilized zirconia. The energy levels are the lowest ever reported for the successful writing of waveguides in a ceramic material. The low energy requirements for writing waveguides should make these optical ceramics more cooperative, efficient, and economical to industrial applications and their integration in devices.
