The chemical imaging technique to obtain a two-dimensional distribution of chemical concentration is a convenient method because it does not require individual addressing of each sensing element in a sensor array. Until recently, color charge coupled devices (CCDs) have rarely been used for chemical imaging in spite of usefulness for analyzing the spectral content of images. In our new method, a color CCD camera was used for detection and monitoring of two-dimensional chemical distribution. The linearity and sensitivity based on our color intensity technique was improved to those of traditional spectrometric measurement and monochromatic total intensity analysis. The new method also has potential applications in other optical sensors, multi-analyte detection, and simultaneous structural and functional imaging of biological samples.
