Abstract of US Patent 5,665,450 - Optically transparent composite material and process for preparing same: Glass ribbon-reinforced transparent polymer composites which provide excellent optical transparency and a low distortion level over a wide temperature range while exhibiting superior mechanical properties as compared to non-reinforced polymer counterparts, and equivalent properties as compared to glass fiber-reinforced counterparts.Non-Confidential Abstract of Invention: A process has been developed whereby glass fibers can be combined with a polymer so as to produce a fiber glass reinforced plastic (FRP) composite which has an optical transparency that is essentially equivalent to that of ordinary window or plate glass. This process does not require any unusual equipment, can be completed in only 30 min., and is adaptable to automated, mass production. Compared to the polymer matrix, the composite has greatly improved mechanical properties; the flexural strength and elastic modulus is increased by 2 to 6 times, the impact strength is increased by up to 10 times, and the work of fracture is up to 5 times larger.

Title: Optically transparent composite material and process for preparing same
Usefulness: Optically transparent composite material and process for preparing same
Summary: USE The material can be formed into complex configurations typical of the canopies of high speed military and civilian aircraft. Aircraft windshields and windows can also be formed. Other uses include sky lights in buildings, transparent armour on vehicles or in buildings, and as replacement for laminated glass in buildings and vehicles.
Novelty: Polymer composite for use in e.g. canopies of high speed military and civilian aircraft comprises transparent polymer matrix and glass ribbon whose planar surface is parallel to that of matrix, and has increased mechanical strength
