University of MissouriOffice of Technology Management & Industry RelationsNon-Confidential Abstract of InventionUM Disclosure No. 07UMC024NOVEL METHOD FOR THE CRYOPRESERVATION OF CELLS CONTAINING A CYTOSKELETAL NETWORKCryopreservation is a process where cells or whole tissues are preserved by cooling to low sub-zero temperatures, such as (typically) 77 K or ?196 °C (the boiling point of liquid nitrogen). At these low temperatures, any biological activity, including the biochemical reactions that would lead to cell death, is effectively stopped. The cells can be resuscitated by warming. However, for many cells, cryopreservation methods remain unavailable and represent a challenging problem. The present invention provides a novel method that minimizes damage to cells during cryopreservation due to physical factors associated with the cell’s cytoskeletal network.
