Invention

This potent catalyst facilitates multiple chemical reactions that synthesize polymers to reduce plastic production costs... Polymers contain long chains of joined molecules and are extremely versatile. One type of durable thermoplastic polymer, polypropylene, is frequently the key compound in product packaging, reusable containers, textiles, stationery, and numerous other widely-used products. A related polymer, polyethylene, is the most popular plastic in the world today. It is found in everything from grocery bags to thermal underwear. Worldwide, 335 million tons of plastics and polymers are made each year to meet increasing demand. Researchers at the University of Florida have created an inexpensive chemical reaction accelerator that will not only reduce the costs associated with producing existing polymers, but also lead to the development of new polymer types.

Application

A single-site catalyst for low cost synthesis of highly active polymers

Advantages

  • Activates much quicker than available catalysts, improving polymer synthesis
  • Facilitates the development of new polymer types, promoting innovation in many product categories
  • Exhibits chemical stability even at high temperatures, accommodating high-heat manufacturing processes
  • Supports high yield preparation, ensuring supply keeps pace with demand

Technology

This single-site catalyst expands the applications of available polymers. The formula uses less expensive starting materials than existing catalysts during synthesis, not requiring, for example, 1,2,3,4-tetramethyl-1,3-cyclopentadiene. It is also more potent than available catalysts and has proven particularly well suited for the homopolymerization and copolymerization of olefins. The catalyst exhibited a higher level of activity and stereoselectivity than catalysts disclosed in scientific literature. Moreover, it consistently generates a high yield and boasts impressive thermal stability.
