Invention
This photoacoustic tomography imaging algorithm produces higher quality tissue absorption images at a lower cost. The global imaging market has grown by roughly $5 billion in the last five years and is estimated to reach a total value of $36.43 billion by 2021. Photoacoustic tomography (PAT) imaging, a subcategory of biomedical imaging, provides accurate images of tissues and organic diseases. Although PAT is becoming increasingly popular, certain critical areas, including image quality and cost, require further improvement. PAT imaging systems employ reconstructing algorithms to assimilate the data captured by sensors for use later during image creation. These algorithms determine both the potential quality and accuracy of the image as well as the number of detectors needed to collect the data. Researchers at the University of Florida have developed an efficient imaging algorithm that is significantly more advanced than those in available PAT imaging systems. This algorithm produces higher-quality quantitative images and requires fewer sensors and shorter exposure times, making PAT a more attractive option for diagnostic imaging.Application
Photoacoustic tomography imaging algorithm that produces higher quality tissue images with greater efficiencyAdvantages
- Produces higher quality quantitative images, increasing diagnostic reliability
- Requires fewer sensors, reducing manufacturing costs and usage complexity
- Acquires data faster, decreasing scanning time and minimizing patient discomfort
Technology
Photoacoustic tomography (PAT) is a biomedical imaging technique based on thermal expansion. Thermal expansion occurs in an object when externally applied radiation initiates a small temperature rise. Through the use of multiple ultrasound sensors, a reconstruction algorithm captures and recodes the thermal expansion data to create an accurate representation of the original object. Since it dictates image quality, the reconstruction algorithm is a critical component in the PAT system. This PAT reconstruction algorithm developed by University of Florida researchers enhances the quality of the generated image while reducing the number of required sensors. The algorithm is much more efficient than available algorithms, reducing overall scanning time.
