*Abstract

Incorporates Low Power Requirements for Better Efficiency

These multibarrier plasma actuators have high performance flow control for aerodynamic surfaces. In aerodynamics, the overall speed and operating efficiency of planes, automobiles and other motor vehicles is severely affected by off-design operating conditions such as fluctuating temperatures, sudden changes in atmospheric pressure, and problematic weather conditions. To mitigate these performance deficiencies, there has been considerable research into plasma actuators as a possible solution. However, in existing plasma actuator models, flow control is limited by low induced speed and the cumbersome nature of power supply transformers rendering them unsuitable for many onboard applications. University of Florida researchers have developed a set of multibarrier plasma actuators designed specifically for moderate to high speed surface applications with decreased power requirements while maintaining low susceptibility to external operating conditions.

Applications

High performance flow control using multilayer plasma actuator for aerodynamic surface applications, including those in the aerospace and automotive industries

Advantages

  • Significantly minimizes aerodynamic deficiencies, improving overall performance and providing a major competitive advantage
  • Incorporates low power requirements, reducing operating expenses and increasing efficiency
  • Minimizes mechanical components utilized, eliminating unnecessary bulk and reducing application limitations
  • Can be utilized with existing micro manufacturing technology, minimizing set up and production costs

Technology

This device involves a plasma actuator design that results in a dramatic increase in induced thrust at a power consumption level similar to that of a standard monolayer plasma actuator design. The design consists of several layers of barriers, each layer enveloping an electrode. The barriers interact with the electrodes creating a flow pattern with which an electric field exerts a net force through the plasma, inducing air flow up to several meters per second.
