Developed at the Qatar Energy & Environment Research Institute, this new design for a multi-effect distillation evaporator promises to reduce thermal loss and improve the overall process in converting saltwater to potable water. Its simple design—including efficient tube bundle geometry and a double-nozzle spray system—allows the water vapor to follow the quickest route between effects (i.e., stages) and reduces scale formation from brine deposits. It also helps reduce brine carryover and dry zones (i.e., areas where heat transfer is not taking place). Furthermore, this type of thermal distillation requires less power than, for example, the multi-stage flash (MSF) technique, allowing this technology to help provide clean drinking water in a more energy-efficient manner.
Given that more than 300 million people currently rely on desalinated water for their daily needs, this technology can help serve a global need.
