Microwave Tomography Using Dynamic IEEE 802.15.4 Wireless Networks

詳細技術說明
TechnologyResearchers have developed a system and method for microwave tomography that can be used for imaging objects on a large scale, primarily by 802.15.4 wireless networks. This technology establishes a new application for which existing or newly established wireless networks can be used to create an imaging system for reliable detection of vision-restricted objects. By analyzing the variation in signal strength due to the presence of physical objects reflecting or interfering with the wireless network communication signal, phantom images can be generated by a computed tomographic algorithm.        AdvantagesMICROWAVE TOMOGRAPHY. Tomography is a highly effective imaging system that has revolutionized medical imaging technology. Microwave tomography, as a new non-destructive imaging modality, has been identified as being useful in many areas, and its potential applications are continuously being discovered.WIRELESS RADIO AS IMAGING SENSOR. Images are generated by analyzing and processing the signal strength variations. Existing wireless radios can be directly used in the proposed microwave tomography system.ZIGBEE. This microwave tomography system uses well established network standard protocol as a basis for the visualization of physical objects.IEEE 802.15.4. The wireless radios of this type are more power-efficient and less expensive. Accordingly, the resulting imaging system would also be cost-effective.
*Abstract

Background

Microwave tomography has been gaining its interest as a new non-disruptive imaging modality in biomedical and geoscience applications. Safety and security monitoring is another area where microwave tomography can be especially useful. Growing needs of concealed object detection and/or screening for security monitoring devices has led to the development of highly sophisticated systems, such as infrared or X-ray based detection devices. While such devices are widely used and proven to be effective, new types of systems with advanced security measures, which can minimize the disruption of personal space and time in public settings like airports, remain highly desirable and sought after.
