Quantum Dots are nanoscale assemblages of various elements that because of their size and component materials have very interesting properties.  One of the important properties of Quantum Dots (QD’s) is photoluminescence of various colors when stimulated by electric currents.    The properties of QD’s can be varied according to their size and materials. Larger quantum dots emit reddish light while smaller QD’s emit blue or green light, depending on the materials of the QD.  Because of their unique properties QD’s have several applications, including biological labeling, photovoltaics, display technologies, telecommunications and transistors.  Near Infrared (NIR) emitting QD’s are especially suited to biological labeling and imaging.One problem with QD’s has been the toxic nature of the materials used in their manufacture.  Class A elements such as cadmium, mercury and lead, are heavy metals that are toxic and make the manufacture and use of the QD’s based on these materials a health and environmental problem.  However, a new process for making QD’s of non-toxic materials has been invented.  The new QD’s are based on Indium-Phosphorous host materials with copper doping and are strong emitters of NIR light, while at the same time are not toxic or environmentally hazardous.High performance deep Red and NIR emitting QD’s are needed for in vivo diagnostics and cell imaging, making the new QD’s very desirable for this and other applications.  To see the issued patent for this technology click the following link:  http://vpred.uark.edu/documents/techventures/tech_docs/us9260652.pdf To see a published paper on the Color-Tunable REd and Near Infrared emitting quantum dots, click this link:  http://vpred.uark.edu/documents/techventures/tech_docs/jacs_article.pdf
