- A gene-splice variant of Bnip3.prevents heart muscle apoptosis due to doxorubicin. Antagonizing Bnip3 may reduce heart mitochondrial injury and heart muscle damage in patients receiving chemotherapy.

An important undesired effect of Doxorubicin (DOX) and related compounds is heart damage due to disruption of the mitochondrial respiratory chain. DOX uncouples protein 3 and cytochrome c oxidase resulting in apoptosis mediated by Bcl-2-like 19kDa-interacting protein 3 (Bnip3). Inhibition of Bnip3 strongly blocks the cardio-toxic effects of DOX.
