Corn Liquefaction Maximized for Ethanol Production

總結
To eliminate these extra steps, researchers at Purdue University have found a way to maximize the concentration of the slurry that is obtained from the enzyme modified corn pericarp. The major change is that liquefaction would occur before thermal pretreatment; therefore, it would minimize any protein composition changes to the corn pericarp. This would increase liquefaction to high enough concentrations, making it suitable for ethanol production. Thus, it avoids major capital investments and provides a path for conversion of corn to ethanol with less equipment in these facilities.

*Abstract

*Background
At present, corn pericarp is obtained through static fractionation and is liquefied using a combination of enzymes. It is usually difficult to utilize this pericarp to make ethanol in a corn dry mill without making changes to the equipment and operating conditions. The distiller's dried grains with solubles (DDGS), which contain pericarp, goes through steps of acid hydrolysis and fermentation and would usually be cooked or preprocessed.
