*Abstract

This multilayer polymeric structure provides a nonlinear dielectric optical material that has a substantial modulation in the nonlinear dielectric constant across the material. (A material with a modulation in the linear dielectric constant is commonly called a "photonic crystal" when the period of the modulation is on the order of a wavelength of light.) Thus the materials described in two issued US Patents 6,582,807 and 6,696,142, can be considered as 1D nonlinear photonic crystals. These materials exhibit an intensity dependent transmission and reflection and can act as nonlinear mirrors to perform a variety of functions including optical switching and optical limiting.
