Alginates as prebiotics in the prevention of colorectal cancer
- 技術優勢
- Alginates can have a beneficial effect on gut bacteria Novel delivery methods can overcome the problem of alginates being destroyed by stomach acids and enzymes
- 詳細技術說明
- Probiotics such as lactobacillus have been used to attempt to manipulate the balance of the bacterial micro-flora in the hind gut. Probiotics have commonly been delivered in food products such as yoghurts and in tablets or capsules. Prebiotics, usually oligo-saccharides have been shown to influence gut bacterial populations. Various studies have shown that consumption of alginates can have beneficial effects on gut bacteria. Novel colon specific delivery methods for alginates are currently under investigation. It is already known that certain bacteria are linked to an increase in colorectal cancer. Alginates delivered to the colon may be an exciting new approach to preventing polyps progressing to colorectal cancer or recurrence.
- *Abstract
-
Probiotics have been widely used to manipulate the gastro intestinal micro-flora of the human gut however the delivery of effective numbers of ΓÇ£friendlyΓÇØ bacteria has proven difficult. Providing a diet containing prebiotics foods which favour proliferation of beneficial bacteria is an alternative, however many prebiotics foods are digested before reaching the colon
