- *Abstract
-
We disclose a new composite material and a process for synthesizing highly monodisperse zinc sulfide and polystyrene composite particles with high surface charge, that self assemble into crystalline colloidal arrays and Bragg-diffract light in the visible and NIR regions. These high refractive index particles, with refractive index values of about 2 can find applications in coatings, filters and photonic crystals sensors and devices. Polymerized crystalline colloidal arrays of these colloids are also disclosed, in which the high refractive index contrast between the colloids and the polymer matrix is sufficiently high to efficiently Bragg-diffract light from very thin films. This is a major advancement that can lead to enhanced properties in paints and coatings.Provisional Patent Application Filed.
