Mammography is currently the only reliable procedure for detecting breast cancers at a stage when they may be curable. Mammogram readings are performed by radiologists who examine them for the presence of abnormalities. Microcalcifications (calcium deposits that form in thebreast) are one of the most important symptoms in the identification of cancer on mammograms. To date, the ability of the radiologist to differentiate between microcalcifications associated with breast cancer from those associated with non-cancerous breast tumors is only 15-20%.This computer program accurately differentiates between non-cancerous and cancerous breast microcalcifications providing radiologists a powerful aid in the diagnostic process.
