Fluorescence methods are of common use in studies of cell biology and drug development. They allow the chemical activity to be monitored. Prodrugs are chemical compounds that facilitate the uptake of a drug into the cell, but then are cleaved by human processes to release the active agent. This allows the drug to have a greater chance of effectiveness, as the prodrug has entered the system before the chemical or metabolic processes that cleaved it released the drug. Combining these two technologies has not been achieved before, and the combination would allow for a more monitorable drug as it is released into the body.
