Coil Radio-Frequency Ablation

技术应用
Ablationof bone tumors, specifically metastatic spinal tumors ; potentially others(vertebroplasty-compatible)Bothsmall and large soft tissue tumor ablation in the liver, kidney and breast witha single insertion
详细技术说明
Clinically tested, single-insertion, minimallyinvasive radiofrequency ablation (RFA) device for treatment of bone and softtissue tumors.
*Abstract

This invention addresses unmetneeds in the field of RFA for treating tumors in two broad categories: 1)Spinal metastases, where it aims to address the problems of incomplete ablation(cold zones), long treatment times, and large surgical exposure; and 2) Softtissue tumors in kidney, liver and breast. RFA has been a rapidly growingtreatment modality for tumors but has the following limitations:

  • It is not effective in complete tumor ablation, specifically large tumors >3cm
  • Existing RFA devices require multiple cycles andoverlapping ablations, increasing treatment times
  • Ablation volume is significantly reduced fromex-vivo to in-vivo settings in existing RFA device designs, largely due to heatsink effects of perfusion.

The novel helical coil design ofthe RFA device, excited with a radio frequency of 27.12 MHz (as opposed toconventional RFA devices operating at 450-500 KHz), produces electric fieldsboth in the core and around the coil that are less susceptible to theconduction and heat loss effects of blood flow (perfusion). The amount of heatgenerated is thus able to effectively ablate large tumors in a relativelyshorter span of time through a single minimally invasive insertion. Theeffectiveness of this device comes from a combination of the helical design andthe higher frequency. The device offers a minimally invasive approach to tumordebulking through rapid and uniform heat delivery and provides the option to doa percutaneous vertebroplasty after the RFA procedure in bone. The combinedspine and soft-tissue tumor ablation market is $264M and growing at a 12% CAGR.
