*Abstract

A new science was conceived for managing power in buildings to optimize and dramatically improve the energy efficiency by using cyber-physical systems. The Building Power Management Stack (BPMS) uses a hardware/software hierarchy inspired by computer systems power management and involves applying sophisticated artificial intelligence, system optimization and sensing/actuation to the physical system of building power management. Buildings constitute 40% of the total U.S. energy consumption, with half of that being for space heating and cooling. Current building energy management is an ad hoc process characterized by a component-by-component approach and limited impact. The new BPMS is a framework to integrate the development of energy management for buildings to incorporate and unify ideas from currently separate fields, resulting in significantly lower energy use.
