Localized Synchronization Detection & Retention for PCO-based UWB Impulse Radio

详细技术说明
This invention relates to a novel synchronization scheme for wireless networks recently developed at Cornell which eliminates the need of an external frequency reference source among transceivers.
*Abstract

This invention relates to a novel synchronization scheme for wireless networks recently developed at Cornell which eliminates the need of an external frequency reference source among transceivers. By utilizing pulse-coupled oscillators (PCOs), globally synchronous communication among ad-hoc wireless transceivers can be achieved. This fast and robust synchronization scheme enables duty-cycling of transceivers, resulting in extremely low power requirements.

The current invention further improves the PCO-based synchronization system by introducing methods to locally detect synchronization and maintain that synchronization through self-reinforcement. The reinforcement feature allows a node to still be in "sync" when it may occasionally miss a sync pulse, ensuring that the error is localized (not seen by other nodes). Additional novel features enable nodes to join or leave and to change roles from master to slave and vice-versa without disrupting data communication. Other enhancements include methods for spectrum shaping and for differentiating between data and sync pulses in impulse radio based transceiver designs.

Potential Applications

  • Medical applications, such as ingestible and/or implantable, low-power radio sensors for medical monitoring
  • Military applications, such as disposable and self-powered radio sensors for battlefield surveillance

Advantages

  • Localized per-node detection & retention of synchronization, enabling duty-cycling for significant power savings
  • Dual-banded, time-interleaved sync and data communication and pseudo-coherent, self-correlated signature generation & detection methodologies to differentiate between data and sync pulses, thereby ensuring no disruption in data communication when a new node enters the network
