A technique was developed that does not require electrical power to create erasable, high resolution, color images for displays. Current display technologies, including LCDs and LEDs, require power to actively project colors and suffer from performance degradations in reflective environments.
The new invention uses otherwisetransparent inks on self-assembled photonic crystal substrates. Using inkjetprinting, the inventors demonstrated the ability to infuse fine droplets ofsilicone oils into the crystal, locally swelling it and changing the reflectedcolor. Multi-color images with resolutions as high as 200 μm were obtained fromoils of different molecular weights with the lighter oils being able topenetrate deeper, yielding larger red shifts. Erasing of images is done simplyby adding a low vapor pressure oil which dissolves the image returning thesubstrate to its original state.
This technology may have a great market in the new flexible and stretchable drawing substrates and low power reflective display space.
