- *Abstract
-
The ceramic nanosheets are thermoelectric and could provide significant efficiency increases, paving the way for new devices that turn waste heat into useful energy. The nanosheets are only 10 to 100 nm thick with a length up to ~1.8 mm, resulting in an incredibly large aspect ratio of 1,000,000:1. The novel nanomanufacturing technique is based on sol–gel, electric-field kinetic-demixing, and a brief high-temperature treatment, thus providing an efficient and low-cost means of large scale crystal growth: the method requires only a simple furnace and power supply. Tens of thousands of nanosheets can be synthesized at once making the cost of fabrication substantially lower than commercially available nano-structures.
Nanosheets are known to have lower thermal conductivity, rendering them significantly more efficient in their thermoelectric properties. Such new properties can be utilized to transform waste heat from sources such as automobile engine or power plant exhaust into useful electrical energy.
