Pultradable Soy Based Epoxy Resin

*Abstract: A novel soybean oil ester based low viscosity epoxy resin system, Epoxidized Allyl Soyate (EAS), has been developed. The resin system is especially suited for the pultrusion process, which requires low viscosity resins. The pultrusion process is often used for manufacturing fiber reinforced polymer composites. The epoxy resin system was developed through epoxidation and transesterification of soybean oil. Epoxy functionalities of the resin participate in cross-linking reactions with the curing - hardening agent/s. Mechanical tests have shown that cured neat resins and pultruded composite panels made from the soy oil ester resins possess enhanced impact resistance properties compared to similar materials made from conventional petroleum based pultrudable epoxy resins. The use of soy oil ester resins also enhances the rate of composite material production due to increased line speed attained with the resin during the pultrusion process. Resin properties such as viscosity and pot life of the resins are well suited for pultrusion. Furthermore, the new soy oil ester resin does not contain bis-phenol A and is therefore environmentally benign.
