Transition metal borides, such as zirconium diboride (ZrB2), are materials which possess a unique and highly useful combination of qualities such as increased melting temperature, strength, and hardness. Additionally, metal borides are strong electric and thermal conductors, which increase the potential of ZrB2-based ceramics within the aerospace industry for use in electrodes, cutting tools, or crucibles for molten metal contact. Such applications require extremely high temperatures, but the current oxidation resistance of ZrB2 needs to be improved to endure these high temperatures. Oxidation resistance is commonly improved through the addition of silicon carbide (SiC) using fabrication methods such as hot-pressing or liquid phase sintering. However, both of these methods have limitations. This technology is a solution to the challenges and limitations presented by hot-pressing or liquid phase sintering. Using a pressureless sintering process, theoretical density is achieved by sintering products at 2100⁰C for four hours in an atmosphere of Argon (Ar). This innovative process uniformly distributes additives into the ZrB2 matrix, which produces a specifically designed microstructure with a high oxidation resistance.
