*Abstract

Non-Confidential Abstract of Invention: Aircraft structures are currently assembled by attaching top-skins to substructures and to other top-skins using rivets. The overlaying skins form lap joints and rivets hold the assembly together. These lap joints form crevices, commonly referred to as faying surface gaps that are prone to corrosion and therefore must be sealed. Current practice is to use a polymer sealant that is applied to the faying surface of the joint just prior to assembly and the sealant undergoes room temperature vulcanization (RTV) to form a barrier to the intrusion of any corroding media. Assembly time is limited by the working life of the polymer RTV sealant. Friction stir welding is a promising new technology for aircraft assembly that has the potential of replacing the riveted joint. However, friction stir welding also employs lap joints in the assembly and these lap joints must be sealed. Current friction stir welding practice also employs polymer sealants that undergo room temperature vulcanization. However, the current polymer sealants degrade the metallurgical integrity of the friction stir welded assembly and limit the assembly time. The sealant and process proposed in this disclosure represent an enabling technology for friction stir welding. The sealant is applied to the joint prior to friction stir welding and the heat generated during welding creates a sealed joint where the sealant has been previously applied. The proposed sealants do not have a limited working time.
