The number of women being diagnosed with breast cancer each year is approaching 2 million with over 220,000 women being diagnosed in the United States alone. Sadly this results in 40,000 American deaths and over 500,000 worldwide deaths each year. Early diagnosis of breast cancer is pivotal and can greatly increase life expectancy. Mammography has been an important imaging method for the detection and screening of breast cancer but the overall accuracy of this test remains low. Optical diffusion tomography (ODT) based on heterodyne detection, is a non-invasive three dimensional imaging system that has the potential to revolutionize breast cancer detection. This imaging system will gain a factor of 10 in sensitivity in comparison to conventional optical imaging, which could lead to earlier breast cancer detection.
