UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURIOffice of Technology Management and Industry RelationsNon-Confidential Abstract of InventionUM Disclosure No. 14UMC012Pharmacological Approach to Treat LymphedemaLymphedema refers to swelling that generally occurs in one of your arms or legs caused by a blockage in your lymphatic system, often secondary to the removal of or damage to your lymph nodes as a part of cancer treatment. An underlying cause of many forms of lymphedema is the failure of the muscular collecting lymphatic vessels to rhythmically contract. These intrinsic contractions produce a pumping action that is critical for normal lymph propulsion but are attenuated due to chronic pressure overload. Researchers at the University of Missouri have developed a novel pharmacological strategy to rescue the failed lymphatic pump system that would supplement, enhance or replace current therapies. Although seldom fatal, lymphedema is painful, increases the risk for infection, and can be immobilizing. Current treatments for lymphedema are essentially limited to compression bandages and massage therapy, which simply compress lymphatic vessels to passively move lymph centrally. These methods merely address the symptoms of lymphedema but not the underlying cause.
