Fiber/waveguide sensors were the first generation of optical evanescent-wave sensors. These sensors were immune to electromagnetic waves, capable for performing remote sensing, and can provide multiple channels within a single device. But configuration of fiber/waveguide sensors limited the ability to miniaturize the sensor and still achieve adequate sensitivity. This also reduced the multiplexing capability of the sensor and increased the required sample volume. The present invention demonstrates integrated biosensors that utilize an array of optical fiber tapers to excite the whispering gallery modes of hollow core optical ring resonator sensors. The HCORR sensor has multiplexing capability and decreased requirement of sample volume.POTENTIAL AREAS OF APPLICATIONS: Sensing applications - Bio sensing, chemical sensing, mechanical sensing and temperature sensing; Capillary electrophoresis - chromatography.MAIN ADVANTAGES OF INVENTION: Easily integrates fluidics and photonics; Versatile sensing platform for liquid and gaseous samples; Low sample consumption and high sensitivity; Can readily be scaled-up to 2-D arrays for multiplexed sensing.STATE OF DEVELOPMENT: Prototype has been fabricated. For more information contact Paul Hippenmeyer, Ph.D. M.B.A.Office of Technology Management and Industry Relationshippenmeyerp@missouri.edu573.882.0470
